An afternoon with the future beauty professionals at Star Career Academy was refreshing. They were a great group of attentive, eager-to-learn, passionate students. This class ranged from experienced clipper cutters looking to become licensed to young ladies looking to become tomorrow's top stylists. I covered ladies clipper cutting techniques for long, medium and short haircuts, and medium-to-short mens clipper cutting techniques that are applicable to all types of hair. They even had a chance to see the newest Andis tool in action, the Fade clipper. The students were left educated, motivated and excited to employ what they learned.

The Andis Envy Adjustable Blade Clipper and Andis T-Outliner can create the red carpet looks worn by actor Channing Tatum and rapper Drake. Andis Educator and Guest Artist Lynn Yafchak provides the techniques.

CHANNING TATUM
Step 1. Begin at the center nape using a white Andis comb. Hold the comb at a slant and pull the comb about half inch towards yourself, glide the clipper over comb and cut excess hair. Work up the head to the crown to achieve your guide. Work from this guide to the back of the right ear and work from the middle to the back left ear.
Step 2. To cut the hair on top of the head, begin at the forehead and work back to the crown using the clipper over finger technique. Comb hair up approximately an inch and a half from the scalp glide the clipper over fingers cutting excess hair. To help balance the cut, stand on the side of your client working eyebrow to eyebrow around the head.
Step 3. Blend the top and the sides by holding the comb vertically catching hair in the comb from the side guide and top of hair. Work your way around to the opposite side.
Step 4. Use an Andis T-Outliner trimmer and a cutting comb to clean up sideburns and back of neck in the shape of the clients choice around to other sideburn.
DRAKE
Step 1. Start with the Envy Clipper in the zero position and snap on a # 2 guard. Start from the back of the head at the nape and cut straight up stopping just below the crown. Use this as your guide working from the back of the head all the way around to each sideburn.
Step 2. For the top of the head, use the # 3 guard on the clipper. Work from the forehead back to crown and along the parietal ridge. Cut hair making sure the whole area is cut evenly.
Step 3. Blend both areas with a clipper over comb technique by placing a comb at the crown where your # 2 meets your # 3. Hold the comb vertically and cut hair over the comb for blending. Work your way from the back to each temple.
Step 4. For finishing touches, use T-Outliner to clean up around ears. To establish an even neckline, start in the center and work your way out to each ear. Use this technique for the hairline above forehead outline as desired or as hair growth allows.

Andis education at American Beauty Academy featured Kenny Duncan and Xotics Products owner Curtis Smith. As a group of young yet talented barbers in the Philadelphia and Delaware area looked on, Curtis Smith and I provided product knowledge, techniques with the Andis tools and motivational speeches. This group of barbers was very grateful and left excited about the bright futures in barbering they have and inspired to create other opportunities in the barber industry such as product development, salon ownership and many more ideas that can't be held in a box.

Xotics Hairbattletour powered by Andis has landed in the heart of West Palm Beach and was a success. Approximately 500 attendees watched as close to 50 barbers competed over three categories: fastest fade, freestyle and best mohawk. Radamez Perez was our winner of the freestyle competition and won $500, Andis clippers and prizes from various companies that have supported the Hairbattletour. The Hairbattletour started out as a 10-city tour, but the industry buzz is building so it just became a 12-city tour, which now includes London and a small town in Nigeria. To find out more about this tour visit hairbattletour.com.
